Editor's note: The Republican National Convention is not just a "Cleveland thing." Community Update checks in occasionally with cities and counties around the region to share what they are doing to engage, assist and prepare within their communities. Bryan Edwards of Lake Erie Shores & Islands shares this update.

Why is the RNC Convention in Cleveland important for Lake Erie Shores & Islands?
Being put under a national spotlight is the perfect opportunity to showcase the Midwest as a great place to live, visit, or even retire. Having the Convention in Cleveland is not only great for Northeast Ohio, but it's great for the entire state and also the entire Midwest and is something we can all benefit from.

What do you hope to gain in the short and long term?
Both short term and long term, we want to change previous perceptions of Ohio and show people what Cleveland is all about. We have the beautiful Lake Erie with islands, amazing indoor water parks, and museums filled with great natural history. We just want everyone to realize how many great things Ohio offers and to come out and experience it!

What is Lake Erie Shores & Islands doing in preparation?
We are partnering with Destination Cleveland to promote Lake Erie Shores & Islands to the Convention visitors and also to Cleveland residents, including Downtown advertising with billboards. We've also increased our TV, radio, and print advertising. All to capitalize on this great event. We want to tell our visitors and residents that Lake Erie Shores & Islands is a great place to come and play. It's an easy drive away just down the coast to a mini vacation, with the islands, water parks, fishing, Cedar Point, and Kalahari.

Who is involved in the efforts?
We have partnered with a lot of businesses and communities within the area and are one of the only tourism bureaus that combines two different counties, including Ottawa County and Erie County. These include attractions such as Port Clinton, Put-in-Bay, Oak Harbor, Sandusky, and Cedar Point. Using these two bureaus, we partner together and market the entire area as Lake Erie Shores & Islands. We have seen a rise in businesses and entrepreneurs in the Sandusky area and these successes prove that great things come when working together to promote our shared mission.
