Cleveland – The Cleveland 2016 Host Committee for the Republican National Convention today announced the appointment of David Gilbert to the position of President and CEO. Gilbert is currently President and CEO of Destination Cleveland (Cleveland’s convention and visitors’ bureau) and President and CEO of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission and will continue in those roles.
Gilbert takes over from Terry Egger, who has been at the helm of the community's effort since the beginning to win this signature event.
The announcement was made by Beth Mooney, Sandy Cutler, Chris Kelly and Chris Connor, cochairs of the Cleveland 2016 Host Committee.
“The Host Committee appreciates the good job Terry Egger did to get us to this point. Terry was the right leader at the right time to rally our community, tell our story, host the site selection committee during multiple meetings in Cleveland and eventually win the right to host the 2016 Republican National Convention. David Gilbert knows how to run conventions,” said Chris Connor. “And just as the Republican National Committee transitioned its leadership team from site selection to convention activities, this is a good time for the Host Committee to have David lead the next phase of this community-wide effort.”
“As the current President and CEO of Destination Cleveland and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission, David has the skill set and track record for planning and managing our community's largest events. And since both organizations are already coordinating many of the activities surrounding the convention, it simply makes sense for David to do all three jobs,” said Connor. “Clearly, David’s demonstrated ability to plan, fundraise, organize and produce these events makes him the right person to lead a unified team dedicated to hosting this convention and showcasing Greater Cleveland.”
